Carbondale Women's group hosts March for Unity in September

Women for Change Prayer Vigil

Ginger Rye leads people down steps to a sidewalk along Wall Street between Jackson and Main Streets, the second spot where the group prayed during a vigil in Carbondale in March.

The newly formed Women For Change community group is hosting a March for Unity on Saturday morning, Sept. 9.

The march begins at 8 a.m. at Rock Hill Baptist Church, at Marion and Monroe streets in Carbondale, and heads several streets northeast toward Attucks Park on Wall Street.

That's where a celebration is planned to run from 8:30 a.m. until 2 p.m.

At Attucks Park, there will be live music, musical guests and words of inspiration.  Guests will also be able to meet Carbondale Mayor Mike Henry.

There will also be blow-up slides, other attractions and free food.

The group is organizing a sign-making party at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, at Olivet Free Will Baptist Church, 409 N. Marion St., in Carbondale; the public is invited.

The group organized a few months ago, following the March 9 daytime shooting and killing of 19-year-old JaVon T. Trott on Willow Street across from a community center.  Jarrell Pullen is awaiting trial for Trott's murder.
