The Carbondale Police Department said it has received three reports of counterfeit currency from local businesses.

According to police, in each case a counterfeit $20 bill was used. In one case, a suspect attempted to pass a fake bill at a business in the 600 block of East Main Street. The suspect was described as a black male, about 20 years old with a thin build and wearing a maroon sweatshirt and black sweatpants.

While the investigation into these cases is ongoing, the police encourages business owners to train employees who handle money about detecting counterfeit bills.

Any person who takes possession of a suspected counterfeit bill should contact the police at 618-457-3200. Police are asking to keep the person who presented the bill inside the business until police arrive. If the person leaves, police are asking the business to gather as much identifying information as possible, including the person's clothing description and vehicle information.
