Students leave John A. Logan College on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2016. 

CARTERVILLE — How do you celebrate a 50th anniversary? If you are John A. Logan College, you host a family fun day and offer free admission to ball games.

John A. Logan College will host a free family fun day beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday at the college, and you are invited. Activities will include a family fun run and walk, bounce houses, fishing, entertainment and campus tours, along with other family-friendly activities. An entertainment tent will host concerts throughout the day.

Sports fans have the opportunity to see two of Logan’s sports teams free of charge.

John A. Logan College men’s basketball team will play Kentucky Wesleyan junior varsity squad at 1 p.m. Saturday in Carterville. Admission is free.

The men won their home opener Wednesday, beating Bethel JV 110-64.

JALC women’s basketball team will open their season at 5 p.m. Saturday in Carterville against Lindenwood University’s junior varsity squad. Admission is free.

Perhaps the biggest contest of the day is volleyball. The winner of the match will advance to the national tournament.

JALC’s volleyball team, currently 19-10, won the Great Rivers Athletic Conference and then took top prize at the Region 24 tournament.

Logan will face Mineral Area College from Park Hills, Missouri, at 7 p.m. Saturday to see who advances to the national tournament. Admission is free.

John A. Logan College was created by public mandate in 1967 under the authority of the Illinois Community College Act of 1965. The college opened to its charter class in fall 1968 and acquired its permanent grounds in 1969. It has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission since 1972.
