CARBONDALE — A 27-year-old Carbondale man died early Sunday morning after a shooting on Carbondale's downtown Strip, according to a news release from Carbondale Police Department. Three suspects in the incident remain at large.

The victim is identified as Keon Cooper.

Cooper was talking to three suspects, who the police described as black males, at about 1:20 a.m. in a parking lot in the 500 block of South Illinois Avenue when he was shot, police said. Two of the suspects were armed with handguns, and police indicated those two suspects fired at Cooper. Then, the three suspects fled in a black newer model Kia Optima or similar vehicle, police said.

Officers were already on foot patrol in the area when reports of the shots fired started coming in. They located Cooper, and performed medical care on him until an ambulance took him to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, where he was pronounced dead, according to the news release.

Police describe the three suspects, who they say are armed and dangerous, as:

The Sunday morning fatal shooting comes two days after 16-year-old Xe'Quan Campbell was shot dead overnight on Halloween in southwest Carbondale.

Campbell, of Zeigler, was found in the stairway of an apartment building at 1225 W. Freeman St. at about 2:44 a.m. Friday.

Women for Change Carbondale is planning a candlelit prayer vigil for the two gun violence victims on Tuesday evening. People are invited to gather at 5 p.m. across the street from 1225 W. Freeman St., at the western edge of the Trinity Christian School yard, to hold a vigil for Campbell. Participants are asked to bring candles. After the vigil on Freeman Street, the group will move to the Hangar 9 parking lot, at 511 S. Illinois Ave., where they will hold a vigil for Cooper.
