A Carbondale man has been sentenced after pleading guilty to beating an elderly woman in the head with a heater.

A news release from the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office said that Carbondale officers responded to the scene on West Freeman Street after receiving a report of a domestic disturbance. They found a 72-year-old woman with a laceration on her head and dried blood on her face who said she had been struck by a family member.

John T. Highland, 48, was found pacing in the living room, hands clenched the report said. He was arrested and admitted to officers that he was angry and hit the woman over the head with a space heater.

Highland was charged with and in April pleaded guilty to domestic battery, a Class 4 felony. He was sentenced to three years in the Illinois Department of Corrections to be followed by a four year term of mandatory supervised release.
