3 dead in Sunday Pope County crash identified


Illinois State Police on Tuesday identified the victims in Sunday’s Pope County crash as one person from Harrisburg and two people from Marion.

The two-vehicle crash happened just before 3:30 a.m. Sunday on Illinois 34, less than a mile north of Williams Hill Road, killing three people and injuring eight.

First responders on the scene found a red 2007 Dodge Charger fully engulfed in flames. According to a Monday news release, investigation into the crash revealed that the Charger crossed the middle line and struck a white 2007 Lincoln Limousine transporting nine passengers.

David A. Wasson, 27, of Harrisburg, the driver of the Charger, and Jarret M. Bencie, 39, of Marion, driver the limousine, were pronounced dead at the scene. Kenny N. Webb, 42, of Marion, was a passenger in the limousine and was later pronounced dead at an area hospital.
