A news release from the Illinois State Police District 13 office said an unnamed 40-year-old man driving a 1996 Chrysler Sebring fled when a West City officer attempted to stop his vehicle after witnessing an alleged violation. When police ran the vehicle’s registration, it came back as belonging to a different vehicle.

The news release said the man fled to southbound Interstate 57 “at a high rate of speed.” He attempted to pass on the inside shoulder an unnamed, 50-year-old from Chicago, who was driving a 2019 Hyundai Elantra in the passing lane.

The two collided, with the man’s Sebring coming to rest in the median, according to the news release. He then fled east on foot to the northbound lanes where an unnamed 46-year-old female from Altamont, driving a 2015 Hyundai Sonata, struck and killed him.

The news release said the names are being withheld because of the ongoing investigation.
