An inmate at the United States Penitentiary in Marion pleaded guilty Tuesday in United States District Court in Benton to possessing marijuana in November 2017 in the prison, according to a news release from U.S. Attorney Steven D. Weinhoeft, of the Southern District of Illinois.

Raydale R. Mitchell, 48, was charged with the offense by a Federal Grand Jury in August 2018, and sentencing is set for 10 a.m. March 20 at the Federal Courthouse in Benton. The release states Mitchell faces up to an additional five years in prison for the marijuana offense, which must be imposed consecutively to the 168-month sentence for distributing heroin, imposed in 2013, that he was serving at the time he possessed the marijuana.

Mitchell was returned to the custody of the United States Marshal to await sentencing in this case.
