Union County State's Attorney Tyler Edmonds has been appointed to serve as an associate judge in Illinois' First Judicial Circuit.

According to a news release from the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts, Edmonds' appointment was announced Monday. 

Edmonds, a Democrat, has been the county's top prosecutor since he was elected in 2008. He ran for an at-large judge position in the First Circuit this past year, but was defeated by Republican Amanda Byassee Gott of Marion.

The Union County Board will appoint someone to replace Edmonds as state's attorney; that person will run for re-election in 2020.
