A 5-year-old girl is in stable condition after she was shot Monday morning in Carbondale, according to a news release from the Carbondale Police Department.

Police responded to a report of shots fired at about 11:26 a.m. Monday, in the 400 block of East Chestnut Street.

Officers found the victim upon arrival, and she was treated on the scene by the Jackson County Ambulance Service, then transferred to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Doctors stabilized her condition there, then sent her to a St. Louis-area hospital for further treatment, the news release indicated.

Officers and detectives arrested three suspects, all minors, nearby, and do not currently have any additional suspect information to report.
