Three people died in an eight-vehicle interstate accident near Metropolis on Sunday involving a semitrailer.

The chain-reaction crash resulted from a semitrailer slamming into a line of seven vehicles stopped on traffic on Interstate 24 westbound near mile post 37, according to the Illinois State Police.

Identification of the deceased is on hold pending notification of family by the Massac County Coroner, state police said. Another six people involved in the crash were transferred to area hospitals for treatment.

The crash snarled traffic between Kentucky and Illinois for several hours Sunday.

State police identified the driver of the semitrailer as 57-year-old Rickey Warren of Holly Springs, Mississippi. In a news release, police said he failed to reduce speed when approaching the stopped vehicles.

In total, the accident involved 13 people — eight drivers and five passengers, three of them children — from six states: Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, Nebraska, Delaware and Tennessee.
