There was a problem reporting this.
Nightly shootings in Carbondale don't help.
The current registrar has been told about this for years and refused to act. Thank you for noticing this Dr. Lane.
I grew up in a "nowhere" little town in Southern Illinois that was only a tiny bit superior to the "nowhere" little town three miles down the road. If it had not been for SIUC, I would not have done anything with my life other than probably what was expected of others who never left town.
But when I got to Southern, there were no student evaluations of faculty. And there were high standards! Imagine that! Grade inflation had not hit quite yet! That came in the 1980s and particularly in the 1990s when colleges started competing for students instead of the other way around.
Now it all has taken on "a story told by an idiot full of sound and fury" and very definitely signifying something!
My point is that I see Southern literally crawling now to please anyone so they can survive and yet another 6 or 8 new bars can open their doors to keep town/gown relations healthy.
But what really is happening is that instead of raising academic standards, they are now willing to jump through anyone's hoop to stay afloat. Hey folks! The baby boom has long since ended. And Delyte Morris's record of building a new building every year is just not going to ever happen again any time in the near future.
So . . . what do you have to lose other than your chains of being a renowned party school for the last 50 odd years? Absolutely nothing but a beautiful place to get an education when one was a young and very impressionable young person..
Either get the place in line as a respected institution of higher learning or close up the doors or let the state of Illinois rent it all out to the Maharishi of Guypoor! But this business of "doing whatever is necessary to attract people is just digging your graves that much deeper and sooner.
I also agree with Chancellor Lee and commend him for seeing the problem and acting so quickly. The article suggests that this is a problem that has developed in "recent years". This has been going on for at least 25 years if not longer. Our daughter graduated from a high school less than 20 miles from Carbondale. She ended up graduating from Ole Miss. She received full ride academic scholarships from Ole Miss, Tulane, Auburn, Birmingham Southern, Emory and Berry College. What was she offered and how much interest did she get from SIUC? Nothing. Her parents and maternal grandparents all are SIUC graduates so we were all disappointed with SIUC. I hope Chancellor Lane is serious about this change.
Very unusual to see an outsider recognizing this problem. Others such as Rita Cheng ignored it while Poshard began the gradual enrollment decline immediately he became President in addition to being found guilty of plagiarizing his doctoral dissertation which should have led to his resignation. Instead, the BOT patted him on the head and allowed the alteration of the material after the event. Isn't this known as tampering with evidence", a criminal offence outside academia? Maybe this outsider will succeed where other insiders and outside predecessors have failed in recognizing the potential of local students and giving them the quality education they deserve?
You must look back farther than Rita Cheng and Glenn Poshard to find be beginnings of difficulties for SIUC. It is a school that has forsaken its heritage in more ways than one. This is a step in the right direction, but a tiny step. In wish SIUC well, but I'm not optimistic.
Strongly agree with Chancellor Lane. Recruiting Southern Illinois students should be the #1 recruiting priority for SIU. Impressed that he quickly realized this.
He needs to start by getting rid of anyone that was hired by cheng, nicklow. This includes the current SIUC Registrar. He only has to ask the people that work for her how much SIUC needs a new Registrar. My bet is he won't do anything about this major problem.
