A truck crosses the U.S. Route 51 bridge over the Ohio River at Cairo as seen from Fort Defiance Park.

The Cairo Bridge is expected to remain closed through at least Saturday, according to a Monday news release from Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

The bridge closed at 6 p.m. Friday because of flooding on the Ohio River. The so-called Cairo Bridge carries north-south traffic between Cairo and Wickliffe, Kentucky on U.S. 51, as well as east-west traffic on U.S. 60 and U.S. 62 between Kentucky, Illinois and Missouri.

The KTC said based on the river forecast, the bridge is likely to remain closed at least until Saturday, and possible Sunday. The closure could be extended if substantial rainfall sustains floodwaters beyond those days.

Closing the bridge creates a more than 80-mile detour through Southern Illinois to get from Cairo to Wickliffe. According to KTC, about 4,700 vehicles cross the Cairo Bridge daily.
