After getting money from a federal grant, Franklin County Sheriff will be adding a new police vehicle to its fleet.

A news release from Sheriff Dave Bartoni’s office announced the $24,000 grant from the United States Department of Agriculture, which came as 55-45 percent split with the county. Bartoni said the total cost of the vehicle will be about $44,000.

Bartoni said the truck will replace a vehicle with more than 140,000 miles on it.

“So, we’ll go from patching one up to one under warranty,” he said. He said making the decision to buy a truck came down to the need for four-wheel drive. To boot, Bartoni said the truck was cheaper to comparable SUV models.

Bartoni said he had reserved some of his new car budget money for this, knowing that the grant was a possibility.

The new truck likely won’t be on the street until early July, Bartoni said.
