Costello, son of U.S. Rep. Jerry Costello, D-Belleville is a financial adviser at Huntleigh Securities, served in the first Gulf War, and was a Sauget police officer.

The Democratic leaders from the four counties in the 116th legislative district -- Alan Pirtle of Monroe; Doyle Jones of Randolph; Robert Sprague of St. Clair; Nick Dolce of Perry -- met to interview seven candidates for the position.

"Nobody's going to outwork me," Costello said after receiving word he had been selected.
