CARBONDALE — The League of Women Voters of Jackson County is set to host two candidate forums this week.

On Tuesday, they will host a forum for judicial candidates for the Illinois Circuit Court for the First District, as well as candidates for the Illinois Appellate County in the Fifth District. The forum will be at 7 p.m. in the SIU Law School auditorium in Carbondale and will be hosted by board member Jill Adams.

Then, on Thursday, the League will have a forum featuring candidates for Jackson County Board at the Davis-McCann Event Center in Murphysboro. The event starts at 7 p.m. and will be hosted by board member, Gayle Klem.

The public is invited to both forums. Prepared questions will be asked of the candidates, but the public is invited to stay after the forums to ask one-on-one questions with the candidates.

Klem says a good reason to come to the judicial forum is its confusing nature.

“For one thing, the judicial election is a very complicated voting situation, and many people don’t know who to vote for,” she said. “It will help sort it out.”

The League of Women Voters of Jackson County is a nonpartisan, grassroots community organization dedicated to promoting voting participation in the community.

“It’s an opportunity to hear what the candidates have to say,” said board member and past president Vivian Ugent. “That’s what the league does. We don’t endorse, we just introduce the candidates.”
