12th District candidates 2018

Kelly, Bost and Auxier

The Southern, along with WSIU Public Broadcasting, the Belleville News-Democrat and the St. Clair County League of Women Voters, is co-sponsoring a debate among the three candidates running to represent Illinois' 12th Congressional District.

We have many of our own questions for the candidates, incumbent Republican Mike Bost, of Murphysboro; Democrat Brendan Kelly, the St. Clair County State's Attorney; and Green Party candidate Randy Auxier, a Southern Illinois University professor of philosophy.

The debates are set for Tuesday, Oct. 16, at Lindenwood College in Belleville, and Tuesday, Oct. 23, on the SIU Carbondale campus. The Oct. 16 debate is open to the public, but tickets are required. The Oct. 23 debate will not be open to the public, but will be broadcast on WSIU TV.

Bost has said he will not attend the Oct. 16 debate, citing the Veterans Honor Flight that is set to travel to Washington, D.C., from Marion the same day. Bost campaign manager Dustin Rhodes also told the Belleville News-Democrat that the campaign had concerns about possible disruptions from the audience at the Lindenwood debate.

All three candidates plan to attend the Oct. 23 debate.

We would like to hear from you. What questions do you have for the three candidates? We will ask about the economy, education, health care, foreign policy, immigration and more. What would you ask the candidates if you had a chance to sit down with them?

Send your questions to letters@thesouthern.com. Please send them before Oct. 21.
