A Metropolis apartment complex is a total loss after two separate fires broke out there Thursday evening and early Friday morning. Officials say they are investigating the fires as suspicious in nature, and the Illinois State Fire Marshal sent an arson investigator to look into the fires.
According to a news release from Metropolis Fire Chief Harry Masse, the loss of the apartment building, at 1015 E. Eighth St., has left six families without shelter. Masse said no one was injured in either fire. The building had eight units, two of which were unoccupied.
The Metropolis Fire Department was dispatched to the apartment first at 8:20 p.m. Thursday, where they found a couch on fire in a vacant unit. They put out the fire and cleared the scene by 9:15 p.m., according to the release.
Firefighters again were dispatched to the same building just hours later, a little before 1 a.m. Friday morning, this time to find the entire roof engulfed in flames.
The investigation is ongoing, according to the release.
