Lake of Egypt man dies after leaf fire burns out of control

One man is dead after a leaf burning accident Wednesday, according to the Williamson County Sheriff.

A news release from Williamson County Sheriff Bennie Vick said that at about 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, Williamson County deputies and the Lake of Egypt Fire Department were dispatched to what was initially thought to be a vehicle fire with a person injured. However, after arriving on the scene, they learned that a leaf fire had led to the death of Everett Spoon.

The release said Spoon was burning leaves in a drainage ditch when the fire burned out of control and began burning a nearby golf cart and eventually spread to a vehicle.

Vick and Coroner Mike “Junior” Burke said it was their understanding that the man was trying to put out the golf cart fire and somehow ended up in the fire. Neither were sure what caused the fire to spread.

Burke said Spoon was picked up by ambulance, but died before he could be airlifted out by a helicopter. He said an autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

A representative from the Lake of Egypt Fire Department was unavailable for comment Thursday.
