Traffic was shut down on eastbound Illinois 13 in Carbondale from Lewis Lane to Giant City Road for about two hours Thursday evening as police investigated a fatal accident near University Mall.

William C. Gowin, 29, was pronounced dead at 6:44 p.m., said Dr. Thomas Kupferer, Jackson County coroner.

Kupferer said Gowin was using a motorized wheelchair and apparently entering the intersection onto East Main Street (Illinois 13) from McKinney Avenue about 6 p.m. when he was struck by the driver of a sport utility vehicle, Stephen Pyle, who did not see him.

Pyle is the chaplain for Southern Illinois Healthcare, company spokeswoman Rosslind Rice confirmed Friday morning.

The accident is under investigation by the coroner’s office, Carbondale Police Department and a Jackson County Sheriff’s Department accident reconstructionist.

Carbondale police Thursday night said they had no information to release, but more might be available this morning.
