ANNA - Illinois State Police and Union County authorities continue to investigate a train accident late Sunday night that claimed the life of a Mounds man.
Jeffrey W. Kelley, 49, was reportedly lying in the center of the railroad tracks just south of North Main Street in Anna, when a northbound Canadian National Railroad freight train struck him, state police report.
The incident happened at 10:45 p.m. Sunday. Kelley was alive and conscious when police first got to him. He later succumbed to his injuries. State police said he was pronounced dead at 2:15 a.m. Monday.
Personnel aboard the train said they tried to warn Kelley of their approach. The crossings were blocked for about an hour and a half while crews tended to the scene.
