CARBONDALE — Barbara (Nemetsky) Bennett of St. Louis passed away peacefully at 11:45 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019, in Barnes Hospital after a brief illness.

Barbara was born Nov. 27, 1944, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Pete and Mary June Nemetsky. She graduated from Zeigler High School, received her BA in history from SIUC, and her master's in education from UMSL.

Barbara was a strong voice opposing domestic violence. Her work at various nonprofits in the St. Louis area had a tremendous impact. She was an activist who opened doors of escape, healing, and education that improved lives and changed a culture.

Barbara leaves her husband, Karl Wilson of St. Louis; her son, Matthew Bennett of St. Louis; and her brother and sister-in-law, John and Mary Nemetsky, and her nephew, Pete Nemetsky, all of Carbondale. She also leaves her uncle and aunt, Bob and Nola Wilson, of Palm Harbor, Florida, and numerous cousins around the country.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her former husband, Harry Dale “Sandy” Bennett of Lexington, Tennessee.

A visitation will be at 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 2, in The Ethical Society of St. Louis, 9001 Clayton Road, followed by a memorial service at noon.
