CHESTER — Betty J. Haferkamp, 90, passed away at 3:50 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, 2018, in Three Springs Lodge Nursing Home, Chester.
She was born to the late Douglas R. and Gladys A. (nee Small) Smith on Nov. 9, 1927, in St. Louis, Missouri.
She married Earl Haferkamp Sr. on Nov. 15, 1947, in Vinta Park, Missouri. He preceded her in death May 10, 2006.
Betty and her husband purchased Superior Cleaners in Chester, from the Pauley Family in 1975 and owned the business for more than 15 years.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, Chester. She taught children’s fourth grade Sunday school class at First Baptist Church in Chester and First Baptist Church in Ferguson, Missouri for many years. She also served as a church clerk for nearly 20 years. Betty sang in the church choir at First Baptist Church, Chester, West Park Baptist Church, Wellston, Missouri, and First Baptist Church in Ferguson, Missouri. She and her husband loved the Lord and served where they were needed.
Survivors include four children, Nancy (Robert) Hinkel of St. Louis, Earl Haferkamp of Hazelwood, Missouri, George (Veronica) Haferkamp of Chester, and John (Shelly) Haferkamp of Steeleville; one son-in-law, Kenneth Gruenewald; 10 grandchildren; one stepgranddaughter; 23 great-grandchildren; and three great-stepgrandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one daughter, Betty Gruenewald; two granddaughters, Jessica and Karla Haferkamp; one daughter-in-law, Irene Haferkamp; three siblings; and one stepgranddaughter, Samantha Sanders.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, in First Baptist Church, Chester, with Dr. Mike Fogerson officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Chester. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Pechacek Funeral Home in Chester, and from 9 to 11 am. Wednesday at the church.
