HERRIN — Robert D. Kane M.D. (lovingly known as Dan) passed away Friday, Aug. 3, 2018, at his home in Kissimmee, Florida, surrounded by his wife and family.
Dan was born April 28, 1936, in Herrin, to Wendell L. and Ruth E. (Perrin) Kane.
Dan married his high school sweetheart Jean (Mooney) Kane on Aug. 10, 1957, and began their memorable journey of 61 years. She survives.
Dan graduated from Herrin High School in 1954 and attended the Universities of Alabama, Colorado, and Illinois. He received his doctorate of medicine in 1961 from St. Louis Medical School.
Dan’s surgical residency was at St. Louis Hospital and Barnes Hospital from 1961 to 1965. He was chief resident in surgery at Washington University St. Louis City Hospital in 1966.
He then served in the U.S. Air Force at Shaw Air Force Base Hospital between 1966 through 1968.
He later returned home to Herrin to join his father’s medical practice.
Dan had the pleasure of serving his patients, friends, and colleagues for 32 years. During his time in Herrin he served on many State and local health and medical boards, education boards, and was a director for the Bank of Herrin. He also liked to help others. After Katrina he volunteered in New Orleans at the medical clinics.
In 2000, Dan and Jean and their granddaughter by James Kane, Marisha Kane Smalling, moved to Kissimmee, Florida where he enjoyed golfing, fishing and was an avid world traveler.
Survivors include his wife, Jean and sons, Wendell Kane (Michelle), Christopher Kane (Kary) and daughter, Danielle Kane Bourbeau (Steve); granddaughter, Marisha Kane Smalling (Tom); grandsons, Andrew, Steven, Jason and Nicholas Kane and great-grandchildren, Audrey, Coleman and Travis Smalling; siblings, Stephen Kane (Bebe), Wendy Kane and Karen Kane (Joel); and sister-in-law, Judy Walker.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his son, James Daniel Kane in March 2015.
A private memorial service will be at a later date.
Memorials may be made to any Veterans Organization of the donor's choice.
He will be missed by all.
