JOHNSTON CITY — Elizabeth Moore, 93, daughter of Jessie and Zora Moore, passed away at 1:20 p.m. Dec. 24, 2018.

Her parents, Jessie and Zora; her grandparents, Britt and Ella Moore and Andrew and Martha Howard; along with her sister, Mary, preceded her in death.

Elizabeth was “a friend of all, an enemy to none.” She gave her life to Christ and was baptized Jan. 11, 1939. Growing up in Johnston City, she was involved in all activities of the First Christian Church and especially the Sunday evening Christian Endeavor youth group. She cherished the memories of her childhood play with Betty Odum and Betty Schroeder and remained in contact with them throughout her life.

Elizabeth's closest and dearest friend was Lois Davis, with whom she lived for some 40 years. The two enjoyed their many travels together both inside and outside the United States.

Elizabeth prepared herself for a career in teaching music by earning her bachelor and master degrees in music from Illinois Wesleyan College and attending the Julliard School of Music. She taught music in the school system of Watervliet, Michigan for four years before joining the Jerseyville school system in Jerseyville where she taught music for 33 years.

Although Elizabeth was very humble and modest about the many honors and recognitions she received throughout her career, she was always glad to tell about the awards and recognitions of her many students. And especially those who had gone on to successful careers in music. Having taught some three generations of students, she was extremely well known in the Jerseyville community. Her real concern for others as evidenced by her many acts of kindness, and generosity will be forever remembered by those who knew her.

Elizabeth was an active member in Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary educational sorority. She greatly enjoyed her friends and time at the Wellness Center, at the 518, and the family get-togethers during the holiday seasons. She was always the life of the party.

Elizabeth continued her active involvement in the Church throughout her life. She had served as director of music, choir director, activities director for her Sunday school class, and many other activities all in the Baptist Church in Jerseyville. She was always in demand to provide special music at church, musical concerts, weddings, and many other community events. And when she would go back home to Johnston City, her dad always expected her to sing “How Great Thou Art” in the morning worship service.

Elizabeth considered her surviving family to be Jim Moore; Cheryl and Dennis Bernhardt: Jay and Jessica Bernhardt; Shelly and Mark Nelson; Marshall and Kristin Nelson; and Elizabeth Marie and Corey Tutewiler. She had one stepsister, Polly Warrick.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at Murman and Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City. Funeral services, under the direction of Jim Moore, will begin at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery. Friends and family are invited.

Memorials may be made to Heartland Christian Church, 900 E. Boyton St., Marion, IL 62959.
