MURPHYSBORO — Esther Lee Lipe, 96, passed away at 9:34 a.m. Monday, July 9, 2018, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
Esther was born Dec. 4, 1921, in Jackson County, to Charles Grafton Jarrett and Myrtle (Wagner) Jarrett.
She had worked at an ammunition plant in St. Louis during World War II. She was a homemaker and had also worked as a cook at the Washington School in Murphysboro.
Mrs. Lipe was a member of the First Christian Church in Murphysboro, and she was a member of the Dorcas Sunday School Class. She liked to crochet and quilt.
Esther married Paul Lipe on Jan. 5, 1946, in Murphysboro, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 4, 2003.
She is survived by four sons, David (Connie Dougherty) Lipe of Bixby, Oklahoma, Larry (Pam) Lipe of Murphysboro, Danny Lipe of Browns Valley, California, and Kenneth (Barbara) Lipe of Murphysboro; eight grandchildren, Heather Lipe, Chris Lipe, Jon Lipe, Mark Lipe, Jennifer Clinton, Kevin Lipe, Carrie Smith, and Matthew Lipe; and 10 great-grandchildren; and four great- great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Phillip Lipe; one brother; five sisters; and her parents.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 13, in Pettett Funeral Home, with Rick Sutton officiating and burial in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and until the hour of service Friday.
