Frank Frisch Bleyer


CARBONDALE — Frank Frisch Bleyer, 88, passed away April 24, 2019, at his home surrounded by his family.

Frank was born May 31, 1930, in Carterville, to Albert and Margaret (Tregoning) Bleyer.

He attended Carterville High School and was a proud graduate of the University of Notre Dame. Later he received his master’s degree from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale.

On Aug. 5, 1952, he married Lita LeVan in Royalton. Frank began his teaching and coaching career at Zeigler High School. In 1953, he and Lita moved to Carbondale and Frank began his tenure as football coach and later as athletic director of CCHS. The greatest highlight of his coaching career was having the former and current football field at CCHS named after him. Frank left coaching and acquired several Carbondale businesses which included Bleyer’s Ladies Store, Bleyer’s Sport Mart, the College Shop, Rend Lake Beverages and The Bank of Carbondale.

He also served in numerous leadership positions for civic, educational, and fraternal organizations. Frank was an avid supporter of the Terriers, Salukis, and the Fighting Irish.

A quiet man, he did much behind the scenes, helping and supporting those in need. He began the Annual Special Population Fishing day at Bleyer Lake, an event that was dear to his heart.

He was an active member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church for more than 60 years.

He is survived by his sons, K. Rockne (Joann) Bleyer of Carbondale, Dr. Frank L. (Renee) Bleyer of Chesterfield, Missouri, Robert C. (Lori) Bleyer of Carbondale, and Steven A. (Toni) Bleyer of Carterville; his grandsons, Jonah Fore of Carterville, Francis Bleyer of Bon Aire, Georgia, Jonathan(Suzy) Bleyer of Houston, Texas, A.J. (Jennifer) Bleyer of Carterville, Stephen Bleyer of Chicago, Patrick Bleyer of Dallas, Texas, and Nic Bleyer of Carbondale; granddaughters, Cyndi (Matt) Clark of Lebanon, Tennessee, Katie Bleyer of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Gena Bleyer of Chicago, Mady Bleyer of Kansas City, Kansas, Margaret Bleyer of Chesterfield, Missouri, and Emily Bleyer of Louisville, Kentucky; great-grandchildren, Samantha and Baxter Hill, Bradley and Greta Bleyer, Ryder Fore, and Jace Bleyer. He is also survived by his brothers, James B. Bleyer and Thomas Bleyer; and his sister-in-law, Dorothy Bleyer and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lita; son, Tony; and brother, William Bleyer.

The family would like to thank his many care givers and nurses including Kim, Tabatha, Stephanie, Mary, Erin, Kelsey, Grace and Connie.

Visitation will from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 26 at Walker Funeral Home in Carbondale. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 27, in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Tony Bleyer Memorial Scholarship in care of the SIU Foundation, 1235 Douglas Drive, Carbondale, IL 62901 or St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 303 S. Poplar St., Carbondale.
