JOHNSTON CITY -- Freda Ellen Jones Schafer, a Johnston City local girl passed away in Sherman Oaks, Calif., on June 11, 2005.
She was born May 21, 1921, to Robert MacFarland and Clara Elizabeth Jones.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers; John Dale Jones, Robert Reiter Jones, David Henry Jones, Clyde MacFarland Jones; sisters, Evadna Jane Jones, Alyce Melissa Maness; and granddaughter Michele Lea Jaress.
Freda is survived by her daughters, JoEllen "Jody" Jaress of Sherman Oaks, Calif., Billie Lea Cornell and husband, Bruce, of Truckee, Calif.; grandson, JonCary Jaress and his wife, Ashley, of Alta Dena, Calif.; brother, Ray Linden Jones and his wife, Edna; son, Russell of New Boston, Mich.; former husband, John William Schafer of Marion; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Freda never stood still. For those of you who knew her she loved to dance. She also liked to move from one city to another, one state to another, and she made many friends along her life's journey through Michigan, Arizona, Nevada, Illinois and California. She was always happiest when surrounded by her girls and family.
Freda belonged to the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority, was an active member of the Business and Professional Women's Association in Southern California, and even traveled to Puerto Rico for one of their annual conferences. She was known for her inventive and original ideas, and no request was too much if it meant helping family and friends.
Freda was an entrepreneur with businesses such as Freda's Grocery in Rochester, Mich., The Gladstone Lounge and Caesar's Palace Dinner Club in Azusa, Calif.; sold real estate, landed hospital jobs at San Clemente General Hospital and Encinitas Memorial, both in California; worked in casinos in South Lake Tahoe and Laughlin, Nev.; and even took college courses as an adult to improve her knowledge and working skills. In retirement she enjoyed the casinos and sunshine of Palms Springs, Calif., before moving close to her oldest daughter, Jody, during her final years in southern California.
Friends and family are cordially invited to a graveside memorial and interment at 11 a.m. Monday, June 26, 2006, in Oddfellows Cemetery, in the northwest portion of the Marion City Cemetery. A "no host" lunch reception will follow at a local restaurant for sharing photos and stories.
