CARBONDALE — Gilda D. Newton, 88, passed away peacefully at 12:35 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, 2019, at her home.
Gilda was born Nov. 19, 1930, in Murphysboro, to Wiley E. and Gladys Thompson.
She loved going to church to worship, where she played organ and piano. She enjoyed sewing and designed and made her own clothes and things for her family, plus gardening, cooking, decorating and many hobbies — her favorite, playing organ and piano.
On Sept. 4, 1954, she married James F. Newton, the love of her life. They traveled over the United States with their children and to many countries.
Gilda was preceded in death by her mother and father; and two beloved sisters, Dorothy and Mary.
She leaves behind her loving children, Cheryl Kay of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and James Edward of Chicago; one beloved brother, Wiley E. Thompson of Las Cruces, New Mexico; one sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Martha and Lynn Newton of St. Charles, Missouri; and many nieces and nephews.
Services for Gilda D. Newton will be at noon Tuesday, Aug. 6, at Crain Pleasant Grove-Murdale Funeral Home, with Pastor Marvin Boswell officiating. Interment will follow at Pate Chapel Cemetery north of Murphysboro. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to This Able Veteran and will be accepted at the funeral home.
