MARION — Irene Marguerite Whelchel Rix, 91, longtime resident of Marion, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2019, at her more recent residence in Clarksville, Tennessee.
She was born April 29, 1928, in Paragould, Arkansas, to the late Walter Hobart Whelchel and Jewel Stevenson Whelchel. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles L. Rix; one daughter, Lois Jean Rix Melvin and stillborn grandchild, Rachel; and, all her siblings living in St. Louis, in their earlier years. Her siblings were her one older brother, Walter “Wally” Whelchel Jr.; two older sisters, Faye Rampsberger and Hettie Fox; and two younger twin sisters, Carolyn Finnegan and Marilyn, who died at birth.

Irene is survived by three of her children, Cheryl Rix Harvey of West Plains, Missouri, Richard Rix and wife, Gay, of Fresno, California, and Elizabeth Faye “Beth” Rix Glover and husband, Greg, of Clarksville, Tennessee; seven grandchildren, Brooke Barry and husband, Jeff, Travis Harvey and wife, Megan, Jake Harvey and wife, Laura, Kale Salvidar and husband, Casey, Grace Glover, and Christina Glover; eight great-grandchildren; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A memorial service in her honor will be scheduled in 2020 at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Irene's honor to Hospice of Southern Illinois, a veterans' organization, or the First Baptist Church Lottie Moon Christmas offering.
