ANNA — The Rev. Robert L. Goins, 87, passed from this life at 11:38 a.m. Tuesday, July 16, 2019, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Robert Goins was born Feb. 25, 1932, into a large farming family of 11 children in Olmstead. He attended school in Villa Ridge.
At the age of 15, he hitchhiked to East Chicago, Indiana to be near his family and worked as a service attendant at Super Parr Gas Station. During this time, he met and married his sweetheart, Mildred “Millie” Chuck. (His second sweetheart, Flonelle, came many years later.) After marriage, he became self-employed buying and selling tires. In their early years of marriage, they experienced the tragic loss of three children. It was shortly after this time that he felt his call to the ministry. In a letter received years later his mother wrote, “you are even more special (son) because God called you to preach his word and you answered the call.” His early years of ministry were influenced by many great men of God such as Brother Benny Jones and Brother Frank Munsey.
In July of 1965, Brother and Sister Goins began having church services in a small borrowed four-room house in Dongola. Their efforts were rewarded as many souls came to Christ. Brother Goins and his father mortgaged their homes to purchase this house, which was remodeled at the time to become the United Pentecostal Church of Dongola. To support this work, Brother Goins opened the Church Resale Store in Anna. This endeavor allowed him great opportunity to witness to others about the love of God. The congregation continued to increase. Then once again, in 2004, under the leadership of this dedicated man the current church was erected. Southern Illinois will never be the same because Robert Goins followed the voice of God.
The Rev. Robert Goins is survived by his wife, Flonelle Goins; his six children, Deborah Sadler and husband, Wes, Rebecca Gibson and husband, Mike, Tom Goins and wife, Sheila, Tony Goins and wife, Teresa, the Rev. Mark Goins and wife, Denise, and Lynn Bailey and wife, Rebecca; grandchildren, Jay, Amber, Rob, Aaron, Keith, Lindsey, Krystal, T.J., Kayla, Meagan, Lauren, Alexis, Trevor, Betsy, Lori, and Randall; and 31 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Glen (Jane) Goins and Eddie (Donna) Goins; three sisters, Joyce Cameron, Lucille (Leonard) Temke, and Wilma (Jack) Roach.
