MURPHYSBORO — Navy Seaman Apprentice Matthew A. Kupcikevicius of Murphysboro recently graduated Navy boot camp from Naval Station Great Lakes.
At boot camp, Kupcikevicius learned skills in first aid, firefighting, water and ship safety, Naval customs and classroom study with an emphasis on physical training and fitness. Kupcikevicius will continue advanced training as a Gunner’s Mate at Great Lakes.
The capstone event of training, “Battle Stations,” gives recruits the skills and confidence needed to succeed in the fleet. “Battle Stations” is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of Navy Skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment.
Matthew is the son of Danulis Kupcikevicius of Bourbonnais and Christine Coniglio of Murphysboro. He is the grandson of Kazys Kupcikevicius and Jeanne Chapman of Bradley, Frank “Chico” Coniglio of Murphysboro and Kathy Coniglio of North Carolina. All of Kupcikevicius’ grandparents are graduates of SIU Carbondale. Matthew is a 2012 graduate of Murphysboro High School.
