CARBONDALE — Southern Illinois Flute Choir will host its spring concert at 7:30 p.m. today in First United Methodist Church, 214 W. Main St., in Carbondale.

This evening of classical and contemporary flute music, under the artistic direction of Dr. Douglas Worthen, is offered free of charge to the public. Concert selections include works by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Thomas Tallis, Gary Schocker, Jonathan Cohen and Friedrich Kuhlau.

The choir is a regional group with players coming from Carbondale and surrounding communities, including Marion, Herrin, Murphysboro and Makanda.

With the recent addition of a contrabass flute (sounding two octaves below middle C), the choir now has the complete range of flute voices available. Today’s concert will be the public debut of this new, large flute.

The choir, which organized in 2008, is open to new members. Weekly rehearsals are from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Sundays in Altgeld Hall at SIU. For more information, contact Jeanne Wacker at 618-559-8154 or wacker127@frontier.com.
