I thought things would be much worse. I thought we'd end up closing the campus down after Labor Day. Glad I was wrong.
SIUC students, who attended classes all wearing masks without any need for a prompt, also deserve full credit for taking this situation seriously. Far from the apocalyptic predictions made by a former leader of the faculty Union and the graduate student union who attempted to force compulsory 100% online classes for Fall, students showed themselves mature and responsible in their awareness of the problem. The 100% online remedy would devastate those" hands-on" courses in Aviation, Automotive Technology, and Dental Hygiene upon which SIUC now depends. The Administration also deserves congratulation in allowing Faculty a choice, something that the SIUC-FA attempted to deny.
