Six indicted on various charges

Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds announced Friday the Union County Grand Jury has returned indictments against six individuals.

l Alfred N. Aukema II, 39, formerly of Anna, is charged with one count of criminal sexual assault, a Class 1 felony, and aggravated criminal sexual abuse, a Class 2 felony. Aukema is alleged to have committed sexual acts with a minor under the age of 16 years old. The indictment follows an investigation by Union County Sheriff’s Office. Charges were initially filed by

information in 2011. He was arrested in Florida and extradited in June with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service. Aukema is being held at Jackson County Jail on $150,000 bond. Aukema is set to appear at 1 p.m. Tuesday for arraignment.

l Roger D. Cannon Sr., 56, of Anna is charged with two counts of domestic battery, both Class 4 felonies. Cannon is alleged to have struck a household member. He was arrested by Anna Police in June. Cannon is set to appear at 1 p.m. Aug. 13 for pre-trial.

l Matthew C. Lewis, 40, of Vienna is charged with one count of attempted home invasion, a Class 1 felony, one count of aggravated unlawful use of weapons, a Class 4 felony, and two counts of aggravated assault, both Class 4 felonies. Lewis is alleged to have attempted to force entry into a residence in Jonesboro in May while armed with a firearm. The Union County Sheriff’s Office, Jonesboro Police and Illinois Conservation Police responded to the scene and fired upon Lewis after he threatened officers with the firearm. He is being held at Jackson County Jail on $200,000 bond.

A motion for a fitness examination was granted July 2, and Lewis is set for a fitness hearing at 9 a.m. July 30.

l Byford J. Miller, 29, of Dongola, is charged with one count of unlawful possession of methamphetamine manufacturing materials. Miller was arrested at an Anna retailer June 8 by Anna Police. The Union County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the investigation. He is set to appear at 9 a.m. Tuesday for arraignment.

l Karen S. Nichols, 44, of rural Anna, is charged with one count of aggravated kidnapping, a Class X felony, one count of armed robbery, a Class X felony, and one count of aggravated unlawful restraint, a class 3 felony. Nichols is alleged to have kidnapped a newborn child from a location in rural Union County during the evening of June 28. She was arrested that evening and is being held in Jackson County Jail in Murphysboro on $500,000 bond. Investigation continues by the Union County Sheriff’s Office and Illinois State Police. Nichols is set to appear at 9 a.m. July 30 for arraignment.

l William Tribout, 51, of Anna is charged with one count of unlawful possession of weapons by felons, a Class 3 felony. Tribout was arrested May 10 at his residence by Anna Police. He is set to appear at 1 p.m. Aug. 6 for pre-trial.
