HERRIN — A small group of enthusiastic children showed up Friday for the annual HerrinFesta Italiana Kids Bike and Pet Parade in the parking lot of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church.

Five children came to parade around the parking lot. Three of them brought pets to the parade.

Ten-year-old Delilah Rossin brought her bunny. She explained that the bunny was named Rocky, who turned out to be a female bunny now called Roxy. Her brother, Abram Rossin, 6, came with Gracie, a miniature schnauzer. Ely Johnson, 4, brought Wednesday, a Chiweenie dog.

With temperatures in the low 90s Friday afternoon, the pets chose to stay in the shade instead of parading around the asphalt parking lot. But, there was a small parade of bicycles. Four-year-old Jordan Alexander and Ayden Johnson paraded their bicycles.

Each participant was given a ribbon and a HerrinFesta 2019 pin.

Kelly Green, secretary-treasurer of HerrinFesta, said the number of participants has declined recent years, but the children who come always have a good time.

The corporate bocce tournament was Friday afternoon. The carnival opened at 4 p.m. with the piazza opening at 5:30 p.m.

Several businesses in town, including Bank of Herrin and The Burger Nook, were decorated with large ribbons of red and green, the colors of the Italian flag. Others, like Sergio’s and NAPA Auto Parts, welcomed visitors on their signs. “Come enjoy HerrinFesta with us,” Sergio’s sign read.

HerrinFesta Italiana continues through Memorial Day.
