Chemical plant fire burning southwest of Peoria

MAPLETON, Ill. (AP) — Firefighters are trying to put out a blaze at a chemical plant southwest of Peoria.

Peoria County communications supervisor Sandy Klatt said Monday that firefighters believe they have the fire at the Lonza Inc. chemical plant in Mapleton under control. The fire, though, was still burning at 10 a.m.

Klatt said no injuries had been reported and that there had been no evacuations in the small town. Mapleton is about 10 miles southwest of Peoria along the Illinois River and has about 270 residents.

The plant sits on State Highway 24 and authorities have closed the highway on each end of town.

It wasn't immediately clear how the fire started.

Lonza's website says the plant has 75 employees and makes chemicals used in wood preservatives, fabric conditioners and other products.
