A Metro East St. Louis man has pleaded not guilty to murder charges in the stabbing deaths last month of an Edwardsville couple.
A Madison County grand jury on Thursday indicted Zachary Capers of Collinsville on four counts of first-degree murder.
State's Attorney Tom Gibbons says two of the murder counts were "alternative," giving his office flexibility in prosecuting the case.
The bodies of 68-year-old Lois Ladd, a chiropractor, and her husband, 79-year-old Michael Ladd, a contractor, were found the morning of March 18 in their Edwardsville home. Both had been stabbed to death. One of Lois Ladd's employees had called after she didn't show up for work.
The 23-year-old Capers is being held without bond in the Madison County Jail.
Public Defender John Rekowski said his team will get the police reports in about a week and then he will be better able to see where the case stands and "what we're going to be doing."
