CARBONDALE — The Southern Illinoisan announced on Tuesday an agreement to outsource the printing of the newspaper to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch printing facility in Maryland Heights, Missouri.

The new printing agreement will begin with the Tuesday, Feb. 12, edition of The Southern.

“The decision to move our printing was extremely difficult,” said Craig Rogers, publisher of The Southern. “Maintaining our aging printing equipment or replacing it was cost prohibitive. Printing at the Post-Dispatch allows us to continue our mission as an advocate for positive change in the communities that we serve.”

The change will not impact delivery of the newspaper to subscribers. Current newsroom and business operations, advertising sales, packaging and delivery will remain in Carbondale.

“We are saddened to lose our coworkers and friends," Rogers said. “They are commended for running a model operation in our industry.”
