Two people were seriously injured in a head-on crash Wednesday involving a stolen vehicle.

According to a news release from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, at about 9:14 p.m. Wednesday 54-year-old Karla Henry, from near Elkville, was driving her 2007 Chevrolet sedan with 45-year-old Richard Owens, of Carbondale, as a passenger. The two were traveling northbound on U.S. 51 near Cobin Lane when a 2002 Ford sedan entered their lane. Both vehicles collided head-on.

The Ford was driven by an unidentified 16-year-old male who was transporting two other minor passengers. It was later discovered that the Ford was reported stolen in the Pinckneyville area and that the juvenile driver did not possess a valid driver’s license. He was also seen before the crash driving erratically.

The juvenile driver and Henry were both airlifted to St. Louis. The release said the department has not been updated on the condition of the two drivers. The two juvenile passengers and Owens were treated and released on site, according to the news release.

U.S. 51 was shut down for about an hour after the crash.
