JOHNSTON CITY -- A state fire marshal has been called to investigate two vacant house fires that occurred Tuesday within blocks of each other on Burgess Street near the Newton Street ballpark.

No injuries were reported.

"The cause or origin is unknown at this time. We don't have any details," said interim Fire Chief Greg Jennings of the Johnston City Fire Department.

Jennings said the department received an 8:33 p.m. emergency call and responded to a fire at 1004 Burgess St.

The structure was fully engulfed in flame when firefighters arrived, Jennings said.

The volunteer fire department soon got assistance from Herrin, Marion, Pittsburg, West Frankfort and Williamson County Fire Protection District.

A couple hours later, firefighters received an emergency call concerning another vacant house fire three blocks away in the 1300 block of Burgess Street, Jennings said.

"It was vacant too," Jennings said.

Both houses were a total loss, he said.
