Miss Illinois 2013 is …
MARION — Brittany Smith of Elmhurst was crowned Miss Illinois 2013 on Saturday in Marion Cultural and Civic Center.
Smith was chosen from a field of 32 contestants. She will represent Illinois in the upcoming Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City, N.J.
First runner-up was Savannah Teegarden of Chicago.
The three remaining finalists chosen from a pared field of 11 was Jennifer Carr of Capital City, Marisa Buchheit of Chicago and Erin Baynes of Gurnee.
The remaining field of 11 contestants that competed in talent, lifestyle and fitness and evening gown competitions were Ariel Fuller of Glenwood, Audra Ferguson of Mattoon, Hillary Hammond of Chatham, Amanda Goerlitz of Lake in the Hills and Kaitlyn Wehr of Moline.
Taylor Deming of Metropolis rounded out the contestant field as the recipient with the most on-line votes before the Saturday night competition.
Smith was given an interview question pertaining to the lack of women majoring in the fields of sciences and engineering. She said more women need to enter these fields and mentioned herself as an example, as she wants to pursue graduate studies as a physician.
She also performed Irish dance in the talent competition.
Smith is majoring in health and kinesiology at Purdue
The outstanding preteen contestant in this year’s competition was Laila Haley of Viola. The outstanding teen was Isabelle Ann Hanson, who attends Benet Academy in the northern suburbs of Chicago.
