PEORIA — A 73-year-old Peoria County man said he was bilked of $1,200 during a surprised visit by a man purporting to be a roof repairer, police said.
On Saturday afternoon, the Peoria County Sheriff's Office was called to the man's home, just west of city limits, according to a deputy's report. About 10:30 a.m. the previous day, he answered a knock at the door. A man there identified himself by name and said he was with a roofing company, the report said. The man said he had come to do some "warranty repairs" on roof flashings, the report stated.
The man said the repairs would cost $1,200, so the homeowner wrote him a check for that amount. The man got atop the man's roof "for a couple minutes," the report stated.
The next day, the resident feared he had been scammed and called the sheriff's office. In his report, the deputy noted that there was 5 inches of snow on the roof.
"I was unable to see where or what (the man) had worked on," the deputy wrote in the report.
