To the Editor:
Ewing Grade School would like to respond to a Letter to the Editor published in The Southern Illinoisan on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2020.
Within this letter, Ewing Northern CCSD 115 was mentioned for their participation in the Sounds of the Season music performance aired by WSIU-TV. The letter commented on a particular student who was singing in the choir. An observation was made regarding the student smiling and singing with much enthusiasm and confidence. It also mentioned that the student must have received or is currently receiving chemotherapy because “she had no hair.”
Ewing Grade School would like to clarify this assumption and statement. The student in reference does not have cancer, but does have an autoimmune disease called Alopecia, which does result in hair loss. Although the remarks made were meant to be positive and encouraging in nature, the district would like to inform the public with accurate information on behalf of this student.

EGS would also like to take the time to mention and describe just how wonderful this student is. She is an enthusiastic, vibrant, young girl that explodes in confidence and joy. Her smile while singing was just a glimpse of her wonderful personality. In fact, there are not enough words to express just how great of a person she is.
We thank the writer for such kind words regarding our school and students and hope to continue to showcase the district’s spectacular music program in future musical performances.
