To the Editor:
The May 3 issue of the Southern Illinoisan contained a most newsworthy article covering the annual honors banquet of Southern Illinois Society for Scholarship. Recognizing the academic and citizenship achievers from 33 high schools in Southern Illinois lends a positive note to the future.
It is most uplifting to read of the continued support of the high schools and The Southern Illinoisan, as well as SIU's cooperation, for the Southern Illinois Society for Scholarship program developed in 1971. From initial participation in the annual awards banquet that year by 96 seniors from 18 Southern Illinois high schools to attendance recently of approximately 200 students representing 33 schools speaks volumes regarding the continued success of the program in 2018.
Congratulations to the high achievers recognized at the banquet, and sincere appreciation to those involved in the very successful endeavor. With assured community spirit, the annual honors banquet in 2019 will continue the worthy tradition commenced 48 years ago.
