To the Editor:
The Mulkeytown Christian Church is Illinois' oldest living Christian Church/Church of Christ, predating statehood and having held consecutive, uninterrupted Sunday morning worship services since being organized in the log cabin home of John and Sarah Tinsley
Kirkpatrick near the Shawnee-Kaskaskia-St.Louis Trail in 1818. The present church auditorium was constructed in 1881, with many improvements since that time.
On Sunday, Sept. 16, 2018, a 200th Homecoming was held at the church with guest speakers, music, historic presentations and artifacts, plus a carry-in dinner with more than 200 people attending the services.
Sadly, The Southern Illinoisan newspaper claimed that they "lacked the resources and personnel" to cover the event although the day before they featured a headlined story about a local winery celebrating their 30th year in business, and that very day, carried a half page feature on a tent revival evangelist.
A picture-history book/photo directory for the Mulkeytown Christian Church is being published and for more information on this or the church, contact Preacher Kurt Jensen at 618-967-4238.
