To the Editor:
Just a note to say a big "thank you" to the many city employees who participated in the recent Citizens' Academy classes. We were greatly impressed by the amount of time and effort that was put into the organizing and planning of the events — notebooks of information, additional handouts, comprehensive Power Point presentations by staff from each department, tours of facilities, introductions of employees and explanations of the various job duties and responsibilities, hands on experiences using various equipment, and much more. Indeed, it was much more than we had expected when we signed up.
A point that speaks to the quality of the employees was that each supervisor mentioned at length how much they thought of and valued those who worked under their direction, that they thought of themselves as a team and a family, and depended on each person for the smooth operation of their departments. We enjoyed meeting them and having a chance to visit with them and ask questions.
We completed the last class having accumulated a wealth of new information about our city government, departments, job duties and staff, and greatly appreciated this opportunity to learn more about the offices and people who make Carbondale tick.
