Rick Hummel explains how the St. Louis Cardinals catching line of succession might call for Yadier Molina to be behind the plate beyond this season.
Q: Should Dylan Carlson be more aggressive at the plate in 2021 if he hits in front of Goldschmidt and Arenado?
Q: Should we be concerned about Nolan Arenado's shoulder injury? The Cardinals didn't seem to do a great job evaluating Marcell Ozuna's shoulder situation before that trade.
Q: Over-under of 45 on Andrew Knizner starting 45 games for the Cardinals next season? What say you?
Q: How do you see the National League Central shaping up, as things stand today?
Q: When you mentioned the potential rotation guys, you left out Carlos Martinez. Oversight, or intentional?
Q: What’s your predicted finishing order in the NL Central?
Q: You've said in that JT Realmuto's movement/market will set the tone for Yadi Molina’s. Are you surprised that he has not signed anywhere yet? And can you envision the Cardinals signing a DH-type player even before that decision is made, if only to not get left without a good option later?
Q: How can the Cardinals consider Matt Carpenter for the leadoff position? The only thing they should consider for him is if he should be a starter.
Q: All of these people hating on the Cards for Randy Arozarena will suddenly think the Cards were geniuses when he falls flat this year. Flash in the pan.
Q: I understand the legacy issue with Yadier Molina, and I have enjoyed his tenure here, but he is a below-average player at this point. How much extra should the Cardinals rightfully pay over market value for a replacement-level catcher just to soothe Yadi’s massive ego?
Q: Do you have a feel for when players might report for spring training, and at Busch or Florida? And how many players might report?
Q: I was recently watching a collection of videos of Tony La Russa getting into it with reporters in post-game conferences, which is something I can't recall his two successors ever doing, at least not with that amount of intensity. Is that kind of energy something that made the job more exciting and gave writers more interesting things to write about, or were interviews like that just as straining and exhausting for you all as they looked to be for Tony?
Q: What would be your two selections as best expansion cities?
Q: Carlos Martinez hasn’t developed, and he seems unfocused and immature. At some point did the organization or his teammates fail him, or has he just failed himself?
Q: Any news on who's courting Kolton Wong?
A: I’ve also told parents, if the kid can handle it, to make a little nest next to their desk. And in the nest is maybe the iPad, snacks, blankets and pillows, stuffed animals, Crocs — whatever they love. If they can be quiet, if they can play, we’re increasing closeness.
