When the first day of the American Legion 25th District West Division tournament in Carbondale was rained out, it changed the scheduling of the tournament. After Thursday's games, the revamped schedule has been set for the weekend championship series.
Christopher eliminated Marion Post 147, 4-3, Murphysboro Post 127 eliminated Pinckneyville/Du Quoin Post 250/647, 5-3, and Carbondale Elks Lodge 1243 lost to Steeleville Post 480, 6-0, to drop into the losers’ bracket on Thursday.
However, Elks Lodge 1243, which would have played Murphysboro in an elimination game Friday, had to drop out of the tournament because of being unable to field the required nine players for the game.
Murphysboro was unsure it was going to be able to field nine players, but had enough commitments to be able to continue. The four remaining teams will now finish the tournament at Bill McKee Field in West Frankfort.
Christopher – the second seed from the East Division – and Murphysboro – the fourth seed from the West Division – have one loss each and will play at 5:30 p.m. Saturday with the loser going home and the winner advancing to Sunday's semifinal game.
The two remaining undefeated teams Steeleville – the top seed in the West Division – and the Orient Express Post 1961 – the top seed in the East Division – will play each other Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
Sunday the winner of Christopher/Murphysboro will play the loser of Orient/Steeleville at 5:30 p.m. with the loser going home and winner playing the winner of Orient/Steeleville for the tournament championship at 7:30 p.m.
If either Christopher or Murphysboro or the loser of Orient and Steeleville beats the remaining undefeated team in Sunday’s championship game the two teams will play again Monday at 6:30 p.m. for the championship and to determine which team has the higher seed at the 5th Division Tournament in Aviston.
