Luke Gannon hits out of a bunker Monday during the first round of the NCAA regional at Louisville.

After one round of play at the NCAA Louisville Golf Regional, the Southern Illinois University men’s team finds itself in 12th place out of 13 teams.

The Salukis, the 13th seed, shot a 301 on Monday, one stroke better than New Mexico, but just nine strokes out of the eighth spot. The 301 was 18 strokes over par.

SIU's top golfer was Peyton Wilhoit (even-par), who is tied for 26th place overall. He birdied five holes, bogeyed four and took a double-bogey on the 12th hole. Freshman Matthis Besard (3-over) is tied for for 53rd place. He had one birdie, 12 pars and five bogeys. Luke Gannon (5-over) and Frankie Thomas (5-over) are tied for 60th place. They each had three birdies on the day.

Auburn, the No. 11 overall seed sits in first place with a 276, 8-under par and two strokes ahead of top-seeded Oklahoma. Louisville and Baylor are tied for fourth at 280. West Virginia holds the five spot at 286.

The teams will play single rounds on Tuesday and Wednesday, with the top five finishers advancing to the NCAA Championships.
